Neighborhood:
Our street is a side street directly off the main Broughton
thoroughfare -- cafes, pubs, restaurants, bakeries, butcher, fishmonger,
florist, yoga studio, health food store, design and clothing boutiques, etc.
If you have children, the Barony playpark is two
blocks away with good equipment and a community herb garden. Also nearby is
King George V park, with grass, trees, and two playgrounds. A few minutes north of there
you come to the Waters of Leith with walking and biking trails, or you can
continue on to the Botanics and Inverleith Park. Three blocks from home up to
the end of Broughton Street there is the tram stop (direct to the airport),
easy strolling to Saint Andrews Square, the National Portrait Gallery, and
George Street (the High Street for shopping). A couple blocks west is
Gayfield Square with a grassy slope and quiet benches, just off busy Leith Walk
with plenty of specialty food shops (Polish delis, Edinburgh's famous Valvona &
Crolla coffee makers), as well as more grocery stores, the Edinburgh Playhouse
(the largest theatre in the UK), and many neighborhood pubs. Cross the walk and
climb Calton Hill for views of the city and countryside. And
Waverly Station & Princes street are just a 10-minute walk from home; 5 minutes
beyond that takes you to the Royal Mile in Old town; and another 10 minutes
walk to George Square and the University of Edinburgh. Plenty of buses give you
easy access to these areas or anywhere else in town. It's a half-hour bus ride
out to Portobello Beach.
